Selank Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the endogenous immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, extended with a stabilizing Pro-Gly-Pro sequence at the C-terminus.

In research models, Selank has been examined for its role in anxiety-related behavior, expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), enkephalin metabolism, and immune-related cytokine signaling.

History

Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow as a more stable analog of tuftsin, a tetrapeptide fragment of immunoglobulin G. Appending the Pro-Gly-Pro tail was designed to slow enzymatic degradation and extend the peptide’s activity in research settings. Since then it has been studied in preclinical and early clinical research, largely in the Russian literature.
