Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) based on the ACTH(4-7) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tail that improves its stability.
In research models, Semax has been examined for its role in neuroprotection, expression of neurotrophins such as BDNF and NGF, cerebral ischemia, and cognitive-performance paradigms.

Semax was developed in the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Researchers sought to retain the neurotrophic properties of the ACTH(4-10) fragment while removing its hormonal (corticotropic) activity, and the Pro-Gly-Pro extension was added to resist peptidase breakdown. It has since been studied extensively in preclinical models, with much of the literature originating in Russia.

CAS #: 80714-61-0
Molecular Formula: C37H51N9O10S
Molecular Weight: 813.9 g/mol
PubChem CID: 9811102
Semax has been studied in cell culture and in rodent models of cerebral ischemia and cognition. Reported findings describe changes in neurotrophin and gene expression and effects on neuronal survival signaling.
Key Areas of Research:
These converging observations make Semax a widely used research tool for studying neurotrophin signaling and neuronal resilience.
